Tech TOOLS to help you and your kids
Prior to the school year starting, you can help your kids with three tech areas:
1) Password Management:
Find a password manager that you and your family would like to use. Google password manager or LastPass are good options. Oftentimes, children create a password that they later forget, or it is not a strong password. This leaves their email account vulnerable and possibly inaccessible if they forget their password.
LastPass works by using a user login and one master password. It will save all of your passwords for every website that you need to have login access to. Your passwords are all strong and unique, created for you by LastPass. The only password that you need to remember is the LastPass master password.
2) Scheduling:
Believe it or not, many children can use Google Calendar appointments to schedule pick-up and drop-off times or events that they want you to attend, such as school concerts. If your child has a Gmail, then they will go to the Google Calendar to add an event and invite you to the invite. They will choose the correct day/time, give it a title, and add your email. This will show up on your calendar, making it easier to manage your family’s busy schedule. This teaches your child time management, organization, and responsibility.
3) Spam/Scam messages:
Unfortunately, there is a rise in Spam/Scam messages, and con artists are really talented at trying to get your information. Talk with your kids about this. Let them know not to provide any information. They should let you know if they receive a suspicious message or call.
Please note, per Google: On the day they turn 13, children can choose whether they want to manage their own Google Account or continue to have their parent manage it for them. You can create a Google Account for your child under 13 (or the applicable age in your country), and manage it using Family Link. With Google Accounts, children get access to Google products like Search, Chrome, and Gmail, and you can set up basic digital ground rules to supervise them.
